A Leading Edge Learning Environment
Programmatic Elements:
Improved function of the teaching space, improves the teacher's ability to teach.
Program Organization
· Space - The form of the classrooms provides a dynamic, exciting space with an
"open" feeling.
· Group Activities - The window space provides an informal gathering area for reading, special
projects, etc. In lieu of the traditional fixed casework, there are two self-contained rolling activity centers that can be used anywhere in the room. Each classroom also has its own sink to support wet activities. The space also functions well without desks.

· Storage - The most precious commodity in classrooms is often places for materials
and projects in progress. The configuration of the mechanical chases allows for closets in each corner, in addition to cabinets above casework.
· Cubbies - Students are bringing an increasing volume of "stuff" to school. The cubby
areas are designed to accommodate large knapsacks, coats and boots. There are separate cubbies for daily activities storage.

“… physical conditions have direct effects on student and teacher morale and sense of well being.” Corcoran, 1988
The real challenge to such a progressive effort is the reality of budget constraints facing most School Districts. To discover all that can be accomplished is truly exciting. |
